Prevent Thanksgiving From Going Up In Flames

A classic sitcom trope is the ‘failed Thanksgiving dinner’. Something catches on fire, someone can’t make it, and the turkey ends up on the floor. It never fails to entertain – when you’re watching it on TV. But when it’s your oven that catches on fire? Not so much.

Before the writers of your life decide how to set ablaze what should be a peaceful family holiday, follow these steps to prevent your kitchen from burning down:

Does your oven pass inspection?: Before you even think about firing up the oven, it should be clean from oil and grease buildup. Not only could this start a fire, it could give your turkey a funky taste!

Be aware of surroundings: As tempting as it may be to step out to watch the game, you’ve still got to worry about the fire hazard in the kitchen. Keep an eye on what you’re cooking – and wearing. Flowing tops are very fashionable, but can get singed or burned while taking things in and out of the oven. Opt for sleeves that hug the arm, even if it ruins your picture-perfect Thanksgiving Day outfit.

Remove flammable materials: Oven mitts are great for touching hot pans, but they are still flammable. So is your wooden spoon, and the paper towels. Be aware of objects that are around, on, or in your oven!

If the worst happens: Turn off the oven and use a fire extinguisher.

It’s much easier to prevent a fire than to clean up after one. Every year, thousands of Thanksgiving disasters occur due to tiny mistakes made while cooking the feast. Don’t let it be you!

From the III family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!
