Avoid March Madness invading your home and property this spring

Spring is a time of growth, renewal, and of course – unexpected weather. While the months of spring bring a little extra Irish luck, the reality is that spring weather, unexpected accidents, and flooding can easily drain our luck. With a few precautions, you can protect your home, property, and wallet from spring’s unexpected surprises.

Here are a few easy ways to avoid March madness from invading your home this spring:

Keep your Trees & Shrubs in Check: Winter can leave behind unwanted branches that may become dangerous during spring storms. By trimming back overhanging branches, especially near power lines or windows, you’ll prevent costly damage from high winds during storms.

Check Your Gutters & Downspouts: Clogged gutters could lead to roof leaks and foundation issues. Cleaning them out, ensuring they’re securely attached, and directing downspouts away from your home can prevent water damage this spring – and in the next seasons.

Reinforce Windows: Drafty windows can let in moisture during heavy rains. Double checking and applying caulk or weather stripping to seal gaps will prevent leaks.

Inspect Your Roof & Siding: Heavy rain, hail, and winds are all side effects of the change in season. An impaired roof can lead to water leaks and costly repairs. Inspect for missing shingles or cracks and make necessary repairs before storm season peaks in summer.

Prepare an Emergency Kit: Storms and power outages can happen unexpectedly. Keep an emergency kit with the following:

  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • Non-perishable food and water
  • Important documents in a waterproof container
  • First aid supplies
  • Extra pet supplies (if applicable)

Action Plan for Severe Weather: Know where you and your family need to take shelter during a storm or unexpected weather event. If you have a basement, ensure it’s stocked! Review evacuation routes often and establish a meeting place in case of an emergency.

March may bring four-leaf clovers and luck, but home protection requires more than just good fortune. By taking these proactive steps, you’ll be prepared for whatever madness spring throws your way!
